What is the maximum SPISlave frequency?

I'm using 2 mbeds connected through SPI to communicate multiple bytes of data. I tried going to the 12MHz maximum SPI frequency: http://developer.mbed.org/forum/mbed/topic/1445/?page=1#comment-7127. However, when I went this fast, the data transmitted from the slave was incorrect. Once I slowed it down to 5MHz, there was no longer any issues.

So I what is the maximum SPISlave frequency?

It is also a question of the distance and the cable. For a short distance also the faster clock will work. How long is the distance ?

The distance is about 3 inches and it's embedded in a pcb.
