The Hands-On XBee Lab Manual

For developers interested in RF development Jon Titus has written a new textbook on using XBee modules for wireless communication.

Jon has provided a brief introduction to the book and the topics covered.

Many people want to use the XBee wireless modules, so I have written a new book, "The Hands-On XBee Lab Manual," which will appear in print from Newnes in May 2012. Amazon already has the book listed (ISBN: 978-0123914040) and the price is about $42.

When I tried to use the Digi XBee modules (not ZigBee, just IEEE 802.15.4) I found the Digi manual provided a lot of information, but it lacked practical information that showed how to use the modules and what they could do. My book includes 22 hands-on experiments that start with an introduction to the X-CTU configuration software through node discovery and setting up a small network. The experiments show how to communicate analog and digital information, how to use commands for remote control, and how to transmit API commands and how to decode received information to decode analog and digital settings and information from remote modules. I also cover sleep modes, PWM outputs, and a few other topics.

Experiments that require an MCU provide code for an ARM mbed and an Arduino Uno module. The Newnes site will provide a download file that includes all the software and the X-CTU configuration files for the XBee modules. Each chapter includes that information in the text, too.

Look forward to reading the text when it is released, it should be a great guide to development with Xbee modules.
