PAA5100 | Robotics Sensor With Cliff And Soft/Hard Surface Detection

PixArt Imaging's PAA5100 sensor is a floor-tracking X-Y motion tracking sensor that can track at any distance from 15mm to 35mm. See the notes below for common applications of this sensor as well as guides on how to bring it up.

Common Applications

PLEASE NOTE: The reference firmware here only provides the functionality for X-Y tracking. For more information on how to enable cliff detection and surface type detection, please contact us at the email provided below.

The targeted application for this sensor is floor-tracking for robotics. The PAA5100 sensor can do all three of the following simultaneously:

  • Track motion on the ground.
  • Detect whether it is on a hard or soft surface (e.g. carpet vs. hardwood).
  • Detect when it is above a cliff (e.g. robot about to drive off of descending stairs).

Uses for this can range from controlling an automated vacuum cleaner to change suction strength based on the surface, or changing the way a robot moves across different surfaces. This sensor can also prevent robots from driving over ledges with the cliff detection feature.

  • Other Applications:
There is a wide range of other possible applications for this sensor. These would typically be any type of surface tracking in the 15mm to 35mm range and could range from applications such as human-interface devices to industrial automation. If you have any questions about whether or not this sensor is right for your application, don't hesitate to shoot us an email at the address listed below.
